How do I customize the 404 page in Webflow?
Design the built-in 404 utility page, link people home, and test it with a URL that does not exist on your site.
Open Pages panel, Utility pages, and edit the 404 page like any other static page. You can change the layout, copy, and links. You cannot add a Collection list, and you cannot change the reserved slug /404. Publish, then open a URL that does not exist, such as /does-not-exist. If a real page moved, add a 301 redirect so people do not land on the 404 page.
Open the 404 page in Utility pages
Every Webflow site includes a 404 error page. It is the page visitors get when the address does not exist, or when a page was moved or deleted and nothing sends them elsewhere. Find it under Pages panel, Utility pages.
You design it like a normal static page. Change the heading, the short explanation, and the links. Match your type and colors so a wrong URL does not look like a broken template from another product.
The slug is reserved as /404. You can rename the page in the panel. You cannot change the slug, and you cannot give another page that same slug. System slugs such as /index, /images, /css, and /js are reserved too, so do not try to rebuild the error page at a made-up path and expect Webflow to use it automatically.
Give people a way back
Webflow's own guidance is to point people to the homepage or to include a navigation menu. A one-line apology with no link leaves the visitor stuck.
A clear 404 says the address is not on the site, then offers two or three real destinations. For example: a heading that says the page is not here, a sentence that names the site, and links to Home, Work, and Contact. Use the same header you use elsewhere if it does not depend on a Collection.
Do not promise that search will fix the miss, and do not invent a list of popular posts unless those links are ordinary static links you maintain by hand.
Keep the page independent of the CMS
You cannot add a Collection list to the 404 page. Webflow blocks that so the error page can still appear if the CMS, or another Webflow service, is down. A blog grid, a featured-product list, or a CMS nav item does not belong here.
Static content is the right material: a logo, a short paragraph, and links you typed yourself. If the header is a component that pulls CMS items, check that the 404 page still renders without those items. Publish and test before you treat the design as done.
Test a URL that does not exist
Open a new browser tab and request a path that is not a real page. On staging that looks like your-site.webflow.io/does-not-exist. On the custom domain, use the same idea: https://www.yourdomain.com/does-not-exist.
You should see your layout, your links, and no server error text you did not write. Click Home and confirm it goes to the real homepage. Check a phone width as well. A 404 that only works on the desktop canvas is still a broken recovery page.
If you still see the old 404, publish again and bypass the browser cache. The Designer canvas is not the live response.
Send moved pages to a redirect, not to this page
The 404 page is the fallback. It is not the fix when you rename a service page or delete a campaign URL that already has links. Add a 301 redirect from the old path to the new path so visitors and search engines skip the error page.
For example: /pricing-old should redirect to /pricing. Only an address you never published, or a typo, should hit the 404. After you add redirects, publish, then request the old path and confirm it does not show the error page.
If you also do not want /404 itself to appear as a normal search result, treat indexing as a separate setting on that page. Designing the layout does not decide whether search engines list the error URL.
Questions & answers
Can I change the 404 URL?
No. The 404 error page uses the reserved slug /404. You can change the page name in the Pages panel. You cannot edit or reuse that slug on another page.
Why can I not add a blog list to the 404 page?
Webflow blocks Collection lists on the 404 page so the page can still load if the CMS is unavailable. Use static links, such as Home, Contact, or a main section.
Should a renamed page show the 404 page?
No. When you change or delete a URL that people or search engines already use, add a 301 redirect from the old path to the new one. The 404 page is for addresses that were never a real page.
How do I know the new design is live?
Publish the site, then open a nonsense path on the live domain in a new tab. Designer preview is not the same check as the published URL.
