How do I set heading levels in Webflow?

Use one clear H1, nest H2 and H3 in order, and fix a skipped heading in Settings before you publish.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Webflow headings run from H1 to H6. Use one H1 that states the page purpose, then nest H2 and H3 in order instead of skipping a level to change the size. Select the heading, open the Settings panel, and choose the type. The Audit panel flags a skipped level. It does not check headings inside components, so review those before you publish.

Use one H1 that states the page purpose

Webflow headings run from H1 through H6, largest to smallest in the outline, not as a font menu. Webflow says headings are used by people and by search engines. The top level is usually an H1, like a newspaper headline: the first words a visitor uses to see what the page is for. Keep it concise, unique to that page, and written for a person.

Use one H1 that describes the page purpose. Use a second H1 only when the page truly has more than one purpose. A services page can use one H1 such as "Webflow care for an existing marketing site." A price, a logo, or a small label above the headline should stay ordinary text. Making it an H1 only makes the outline harder to skim.

Nest H2 and H3 in order

Sections under the H1 are usually H2s. An H3 belongs under an H2, then an H4 under an H3, and so on. Do not jump from H1 to H3 because the H3 style looks smaller. Webflow's guidance is to avoid using heading levels to show visual differences, and to avoid heading text that exists only so a checker passes. If a line should look small, change the font size with a class. Leave the level matched to the outline.

Example for /services. H1: Webflow care for an existing marketing site. H2: What happens each month. H3: Written requests. H3: Included hours. H2: What stays in your Webflow account. Someone can read only those lines and know the page. A screen reader can move through the same outline.

Add the Heading from the Add panel. Double-click it, or select it and press Enter, then replace the placeholder. To change the level, select the heading, open the Settings panel (D), and press the type you need, such as H2 or H3.

Fix a skipped level in the Audit panel

Open the Audit panel from the left toolbar. It flags a skipped heading level as an accessibility issue. A skip means the numbers are out of sequence, for example an H1 and an H3 with no H2 on the page. That break is confusing for people using a screen reader and for people who skim.

If the skip was an accident, select the heading, open Settings, and press the missing type. If you are still building and the outline is temporary, hover the issue and use the silenced bell to hide it. Open the issue later and use the bell to flag it again before you publish.

The Audit panel does not check accessibility or SEO issues inside components. A navbar or a card component can hide a second H1 or a skipped level. Open those components and read the heading types there. The panel also will not do this check for you.

Match the outline to the title tag, then publish

The visible H1 and the SEO title tag are different fields. The title tag lives under Page settings, SEO settings, and it is what a search result can show. The H1 is what a person sees on the page. They should describe the same page. They do not have to be the same sentence. A title tag might read "Webflow support for marketing sites," while the H1 reads "Webflow care for an existing marketing site."

After a rewrite, read only the headings from top to bottom. If a heading does not say what the section contains, change the words. If the sizes look right but the levels jump, fix the type in Settings. Publish once the outline matches the live copy, then spot-check that page on the published URL.

If the same pages keep shipping with skipped headings, I can include that check in the written monthly work. The membership is one plan for every existing Webflow site: $999 per month, including 10 hours of Webflow work. Unused hours expire at the end of each monthly billing period and do not carry over.

Questions & answers

Can a page have two H1 headings?

Use one H1 that describes the page purpose. Add another H1 only when the page truly has more than one purpose. A large label or a logo line does not need to be an H1.

Why did the Audit panel flag a heading?

A skipped level means the numbers jump, such as an H1 followed by an H3 with no H2. Select the heading, open Settings, and choose the missing type.

Does the Audit panel check headings inside components?

No. The Audit panel does not check accessibility or SEO issues inside components. Open the component and confirm the heading levels yourself.

Should the H1 be identical to the SEO title tag?

No. The H1 is the on-page heading. The title tag is a separate field in Page settings, SEO settings. They should describe the same page, and the wording can differ.
