How do I limit items in a Webflow Collection list?
Show fewer than 100 items on a dynamic Collection list, and use Skip when a second list should start later.
Select a dynamic Collection list, open Collection list settings, and turn Limit items on. Set Show to how many items that page should display. You can show up to 100 items while pagination is off. Leave Show blank to use the default list, which still stops at 100. Sort and filters choose which items qualify and in what order. Skip offsets where that result starts.
Turn Limit items on
A Collection list shows 100 items from its Collection by default. A homepage rarely needs all of them. Limit items is how you show fewer.
The control is only on a dynamic list. A curated list, where you pick items by hand, does not offer a display limit, a filter, a sort, or pagination. If you do not see Limit items, select the list, set the type to dynamic, and connect the Collection.
Select the list on the canvas. Open Element settings, then Collection list settings. Turn Limit items on. Set Show to the number of items this page should display. A homepage that should show three recent posts uses 3.
You can show up to 100 items while pagination is off. Leave Show blank when you want the default list. That default still stops at 100. To go past 100 as separate pages, turn pagination on. Pagination adds Previous and Next. Use it when people should browse a long archive. Use a display limit when the page should stay short.
Decide which items those spots belong to
Show only cuts the list. It does not choose the items. Sort and filters do that, and they also exist only on a dynamic list.
Set the sort first. A date sort with newest first, and Show set to 3, is the three latest items. A name sort would fill those three spots with the earliest names alphabetically, which is a different page.
Then add a filter if the short list should ignore some items. A Switch field named Featured can keep the list to items you marked. The filter decides who qualifies. Show decides how many of those qualified items appear.
Example: a Case studies Collection has 40 items, and 8 of them have Featured turned on. Filter the list to that Switch, sort by date, newest first, and set Show to 3. The homepage shows three featured studies. It does not show the other five featured studies, and it does not show the 32 that are not featured.
You can connect the display limit to a component property when one list component should show three items in one place and six in another. One Show value is enough when every instance should match.
Use Skip when the list should start later
After Show has a number, Skip offsets the start. Show 3 and Skip 3 starts at the fourth item and shows three. That is how two lists on one page can show different slices of the same Collection. The first list uses Show 3 and leaves Skip empty. The second uses Show 3 and Skip 3. The page shows six items, and the first three are not repeated.
Skip can also put more than 100 items on one page without pagination. Duplicate the list. On the copy, turn Limit items on, set Show to 100, and set Skip to 100. The first list shows items 1 through 100. The second shows items 101 through 200. Repeat the pattern if you need another slice. Each copy is its own Collection list on the page.
Use that pattern when the design needs a long page of items. Use pagination when the visitor should move through pages instead. Sort and filters still decide the order before Skip moves the start.
Publish and count what you see
A limit you set in the Designer does not change the live site until you publish. Open the published page and count the cards. If you still see a long list, confirm the list is dynamic, Limit items is on, and Show is the number you wanted. A blank Show field is the default list, up to 100 items.
If the list is empty, the limit is not the cause. A filter may be excluding every item, or the items may not be published. Open one item you expected to see and check that it matches the filter.
Then change Show from 3 to 6, publish again, and count. If at least six items qualify, the page should show six cards. Change it back if 3 was the real design. That check tells you the live page is using the setting you saved.
Questions & answers
Why is Limit items missing?
Display limits, filters, sort order, and pagination are only on dynamic Collection lists. A curated list, where you pick items by hand, does not offer them. Set the list type to dynamic and connect the Collection.
Can I show more than 100 items without pagination?
Yes. Duplicate the list, turn Limit items on for the copy, set Show to 100, and set Skip to 100. The first list shows items 1 through 100. The copy shows items 101 through 200.
Does a filter run before the display limit?
Filters choose which items qualify, and sort sets their order. Show then cuts that result down to the number you set. Skip only moves the start of the same result.
Why does the published page still show every item?
Publish after you save the limit. Then confirm the list is dynamic, Limit items is on, and Show is the number you wanted. A blank Show field is the default list, up to 100 items.
