How do I add Google Tag Manager in Webflow?

Connect a Tag Manager container with the Google site tools app, publish the site, and remove a duplicate Analytics ID.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Install the Google site tools for Webflow app, choose the site, and sign in with Google. Skip any service you do not want. Choose the Tag Manager account and container, then publish. Only Designer or Marketer roles can install the app. If a measurement ID is already under Site settings, delete it after the app is connected so the old integration does not keep loading.

Use the app for the container

Google Tag Manager is connected in Webflow through the Google site tools for Webflow app. The same app can also connect Google Analytics 4 and Search Console. You do not paste a container snippet into the head for this path.

Only a Designer or a Marketer can install the app and view the metrics it shows. If your role cannot open the install, ask someone with one of those roles. Publishing still has to happen afterward, or the connection does not go live.

If you only need a GA4 measurement ID, and you do not want a container, use the Google Analytics guide. That page uses Site settings. This page is the container: ads tags, extra pixels, or other tags you already manage in Tag Manager.

Example: your ads tags already live in one container. You want that container on the marketing site, and you do not want a second copy of the same tags in custom code.

Choose the container while you install

Webflow's article assumes the Google products already exist, and it also lets you create a Tag Manager account during the install. You can skip any Google service you do not want on the site.

Open the Google site tools for Webflow app and click Add to site. Then:

  • Choose the Webflow site.
  • Sign in to Google and click Start.
  • Confirm the domains if you are connecting Search Console. Skip that service if you do not want it.
  • Choose the Tag Manager account and the container.
  • Choose an Analytics account and property only if you want Analytics through this app.
  • Click Add to site, then Back to Webflow.

Pick the container that already holds the tags you mean to run. The install lists accounts and containers from the Google login you used. If the container is missing, it is under a different Google account. Disconnect later and sign in with the account that owns it, or choose the right account before you finish.

The app does not ask you to copy a snippet into the page. Custom code in the head or footer is a different method. The custom code guide is that field. If a Tag Manager snippet is already there, remove it when you switch to the app. Two copies of the same container can both load.

Remove a measurement ID you saved earlier

If you connect Analytics with this app, and a measurement ID is still saved under Site settings, remove that older integration. Webflow's article says to delete it after the app is connected, so the page does not keep loading the Site settings copy as well.

Do that in this order:

  • Open Site settings, Apps & Integrations, Google Analytics.
  • Delete the measurement ID.
  • Click Save.
  • Publish the site.

Leave the measurement ID in place if you skipped Analytics in the app and that ID is the only Google Analytics tag you want. The load-time warning is about two copies, not about deleting the only one. The Analytics guide is the path that keeps a measurement ID when you are not using this app for Analytics.

Publish, then confirm the app

Publishing finishes the app setup. A save in the Designer, or a look at the preview, does not complete it. Publish to the domain you actually use, then open the live site once.

In Webflow, open the Apps panel and launch Google site tools for Webflow. Tag Manager should show the account and container you chose. If you also connected Analytics, the app can show site metrics there. Open Google Analytics from the app when you want the fuller report. Those metrics are the Analytics view. They do not list every tag inside the container.

To see whether a specific tag in the container runs, check that tag in Google after the site is published. Webflow's setup article stops at the connected container. It does not show a log of each tag.

While you test, use a browser that is not blocking tags. If the container looks connected in the app and the live page was published after that connection, the Webflow side of the install is in place.

Extra scripts still cost load time. The site speed guide is the check for tags you no longer need. A container can hold more than the one tag you meant to add. Remove unused tags in Google, not by stacking a second container in Webflow.

Disconnect a service or uninstall the app

To drop one Google service and keep the others, open the Apps panel, launch the app, and click the settings icon in the app window. Click Disconnect next to the service. Edit is the control when you want a different account, container, or property instead of a full disconnect. Publish after you change it.

To remove the app from the site, open Site settings, Apps & Integrations, Connected Apps. Find Google site tools for Webflow, click View details, then Uninstall App. Publish again so the live site drops what the app added.

Example: the ads container should move to a new Google account. Disconnect Tag Manager, connect the new account and container, delete any leftover measurement ID if you add one by habit, and publish. Then load the live homepage and confirm the app shows the new container before you judge campaign numbers.

Questions & answers

Can a content editor install Tag Manager?

No. Webflow's article says only Designer or Marketer roles can install the Google site tools app and view its metrics.

Do I paste the container snippet into the head code?

Not for this setup. The app connects the container. If a Tag Manager snippet is already in custom code, remove that copy before you publish the app, so the container is not added twice.

I only want the GA4 measurement ID. Do I still need this app?

No. Site settings can take a measurement ID on its own. Use that path when you do not want Tag Manager. This page is for a container.

How do I point the site at a different container?

Open the app from the Apps panel, then choose Edit or Disconnect next to Tag Manager and select the other account or container. Publish again after the change.
