How do I replace an asset everywhere in Webflow?

Replace a Webflow file from the Assets panel so every use updates. Use Replace image when only one element should change.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Open the Assets panel, hover the file, open more options, and click Replace. Choose the new file and click Open. Webflow updates that asset everywhere it is used. Change the file outside Webflow first. You cannot edit the picture in the Designer. Replacing also changes the asset URL, so update any pasted link by hand. To change one image only, select that element and click Replace image.

Replace the file, not a copy of every element

Webflow does not let you edit the pixels of an image, or the pages of a PDF, inside the Designer. Change the file in the tool you used to make it, export a new file, and then replace the asset. Webflow's Assets article says a replace updates that asset everywhere it is used on the site. One logo in the navbar and the same logo in the footer can both change from that single replace.

Open the Assets panel from the Assets icon in the left toolbar, or press J. Hover the asset, click the more options icon, click Replace, select the new file, and click Open. Use a short file name, 100 characters or less including the extension, so the upload does not fail on the name.

Example: the company mark changed from a wordmark to a symbol. Export symbol.png, replace the existing logo asset, and both the navbar and the footer pick up the symbol because they use that asset. You do not select each image element first. The navbar guide is about placing a logo. This page is about swapping the file those placements already use.

Know when Replace is the wrong click

Replace is site-wide for that asset. Use it when every use should show the new file. Do not use it when one placement should change and the others should stay.

To change a single image element, select it on the canvas, open Element settings, Image settings, and click Replace image. Choose a different file, or upload a new one. The other elements that still use the original asset keep the original file.

Example: the hero should show this quarter's photo, and the footer should keep the office photo. Those are two assets. Replace image on the hero, and pick the new file. If both spots currently share one asset, replace would change the footer too. Upload the new photo as its own asset and point only the hero at it.

A background image that uses the asset is still a use of that asset. The background image guide shows how a background is set. If the background and an image element share one file, Replace updates both.

Update links that used the old URL

Replacing an asset changes its URL. Webflow says any direct link to that URL, on your site or on another site, has to be updated by hand. Elements that use the asset through the Designer follow the new file. A link you pasted as a raw address does not.

This shows up with documents. A menu PDF is linked from a button by the copied asset URL. You replace menu.pdf with the spring menu. The button can still point at the old address. Open more options on the new asset, click Copy link, and put that address on the button. If someone outside the site bookmarked the old PDF address, send them the new one. You cannot keep the old address and the new file as the same link.

Images have a maximum size of 4 MB. The types the Assets panel accepts are PNG, JPEG, JPG, GIF, SVG, WebP, and AVIF. Documents and audio files are limited to 10 MB, and uploading those types requires a paid Workspace or a paid Site plan. An error on Replace is often the size, the type, or that plan limit, not a stuck button.

Check alt text, then look at the published page

If the new image shows something else, the old description can be wrong. Open more options, click Edit settings, and set Descriptive alt text that matches the new file. Mark it Decorative only when the image carries no information. The alt text guide covers that choice and compression. Compression is a different action from Replace. Do not compress an Open Graph image into a format that share cards cannot use. The alt text guide states that limit.

Shared Library assets are replaced on the Library's source site. On any other site, you can duplicate the shared asset to make a local copy, then replace the copy. The duplicate stays on that site. Later Library updates do not change it, and your replace does not change the shared original.

Open the published site after the replace and look at each place the file appears: the navbar, the footer, and any background that used it. If the live page still shows the old file, publish the site and check again. A staging subdomain and the custom domain can be published separately, so look at the domain your visitors use.

Click a document link as well as looking at images. A logo can be right while a PDF button still downloads last year's file, because that button held a direct URL. Fix the URL, publish if the live page needs it, and click the button once more.

Questions & answers

I replaced the logo asset and a button still downloads the old PDF. Why?

Replace updates places that use the asset. A link that was pasted as the old asset URL does not follow the new file. Copy the new link from the asset menu and update that button.

The footer should keep the old photo and the hero should change. Will Replace do that?

No. Replace updates every use of that asset. Select the hero image element, open Image settings, and click Replace image. Pick a different file so the footer keeps the original asset.

The new file will not upload. What are the limits?

Images must be PNG, JPEG, JPG, GIF, SVG, WebP, or AVIF, and the maximum size is 4 MB. Documents and audio go up to 10 MB, and uploading those types needs a paid Workspace or a paid Site plan.

Can I replace a logo that comes from a shared Library?

Only on the Library's source site. On a site that merely uses the Library, duplicate the asset first if you need a local file you can replace. The duplicate does not change the shared original.
