How do I add a link field to a Webflow Collection?
Store one URL on each Webflow CMS item and connect it to a button, text link, or link block in the list.
In Collection settings, click Add New Field and choose Link. The field stores one URL on each item. On a Collection list or Collection page, select a button, text link, or link block, choose the URL link type, and connect the link field. Publish the whole site after a schema change. A reference field points at another item. An email or phone link is a different link type.
Add a link field when each item has its own address
A link field stores a URL on a Collection item. Webflow's collection fields article says you can connect it to a button, a text link, or a link block. Use it when each item should open a different address, such as a partner website or a registration page that is not a page in this Collection.
It is not a reference field. A reference points at another Collection item. The reference field guide is that control. It is not an email link or a phone link. Those are separate link types, covered in the email and phone guide. A button that should open the item's own Collection page uses the Collection page link type, not a link field.
Add the field in Collection settings
Open the CMS panel. Hover the Collection and click the Settings icon. Webflow's collections article says you add a default field, including Link, with Add New Field. Choose Link. When you add a field, you can enter help text so editors know which URL belongs there, and you can mark the field required when every item must have an address.
Name it for the destination, such as Partner site. Save the Collection. A change to the schema needs a publish of the whole site before the live site reflects it. Webflow's collections article says that publish is required after the schema changes.
Open an item and paste the full URL, including https. Example: a Partners Collection has one item for North Office, and Partner site is https://north.example.com. The next item gets a different address. If some items have no outside page, leave the field optional so an editor is not forced to invent a URL.
Connect it on the button
On a Collection list or a Collection page, select the button, text link, or link block. Open Element settings with D, or use the settings icon beside the element label. Webflow's collection page article says you connect a link element to a link field in the URL link type. Choose URL, then connect the Partner site field there.
The link settings article says a URL link can use Open in a new tab when the destination should open in a new tab. The new tab guide is that same checkbox on a static link. Check it when a partner site should leave your page open behind it.
If every card opens the same address, the button still has a URL you typed by hand. Connect the field so each item supplies its own. A Collection page link, in the same settings, is the other choice. Use it when the button should open the item's page on your site. Use the link field when the button should open the address stored on the item.
Publish the schema and test two items
Publish the whole site after you add the field. Then publish the items. Open two cards. Each button should go to the URL on that item. If Open in a new tab is on, the original tab should stay in place.
If the live button does nothing, confirm the item has a full URL, the element sits inside the Collection list or on the Collection page, and the link type is URL connected to the field. A field that was saved in the Designer and never published will not show on the live site. Publish the site again after the schema change, then retest both cards.
Adding the field and connecting the button is ordinary CMS work. The membership is one plan for every existing Webflow site: $999 per month, including 10 hours of Webflow work. Your Webflow subscription and hosting stay in your own account.
Questions & answers
Every card opens the same website. What did I miss?
The button still has a pasted URL. On the element inside the Collection list, choose the URL link type and connect the link field so each item supplies its own address.
Should this button open the item's own page instead?
Use the Collection page link type for that, and choose the current item. A link field is for an address you store on the item, such as a partner site.
Can I use a link field for a phone number?
Use a phone field and the Phone link type for a call. A link field is a generic URL. Email is its own link type as well.
I saved the field and the live site still has no button URL. Why?
A schema change needs a publish of the whole site before the live site reflects it. Publish the site, then publish the items, and test two cards.
